Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off a major boost for women in Bihar on Friday, launching the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana through a video conference from New Delhi. In a direct move, he transferred Rs 10,000 into the bank accounts of 75 lakh women across the state, adding up to a whopping Rs 7,500 crore via Direct Benefit Transfer.
This new self-employment scheme targets one woman per family in Bihar, helping them kickstart their own ventures. Each beneficiary gets an initial Rs 10,000 grant right away, with chances for up to Rs 2 lakh more in later stages. Women can use the funds for whatever suits them best—like farming, animal husbandry, handicrafts, tailoring, weaving, or other small businesses—to build economic independence.
During the launch event, Modi chatted with some of the women receiving the aid. They couldn’t stop praising the initiative and thanked both the Prime Minister and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for making it happen.
The Bihar government designed this program to make women Aatmanirbhar—self-reliant—and drive women empowerment through real livelihood opportunities. It’s all community-focused too: Women connected to Self Help Groups will get training from local resource persons to guide their projects. Plus, the state plans to upgrade Gramin Haat-Bazaars to help sell their products and grow local markets.
The rollout drew huge crowds, with a statewide program reaching districts, blocks, clusters, and villages. Over 1 crore women tuned in to watch, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh Minister Narendra Kashyap gave a shoutout to these kinds of government efforts for women empowerment. Talking to , he said Modi has always prioritized the nation’s growth, especially uplifting women through schemes like this one in Bihar. “This Rs 7,500 crore push will empower women and help Bihar join the ranks of India’s top developing states,” Kashyap added. He believes these steps will bring big benefits to Bihar’s people and boost the state’s progress.
