Mariners fan praised for giving away Cal Raleigh’s historic home run ball to child — weeks after viral Phillies outrage: ‘Always be kind’

A Seattle Mariners fan turned into an instant hero at T-Mobile Park when he caught a historic home run ball and gave it straight to a wide-eyed 12-year-old boy sitting nearby. Glenn Mutti-Driscoll snagged the souvenir during Wednesday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies, and fans erupted in cheers as he passed it along without hesitation.

The ball marked a huge milestone: Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh’s 60th home run of the season, the first time any player on the team has hit that mark in a single year. Mutti-Driscoll held it up triumphantly for about 15 seconds before spotting Marcus Ruelos and deciding the kid deserved it more. “The whole thing was surreal,” Mutti-Driscoll told MLB.com. “It just happened so fast, and I looked down at this kid—he deserves it more than me. Plus, it helps baseball’s reputation with those feel-good stories.”

Marcus’ dad, Galan Ruelos, couldn’t believe it. “A genuine act of kindness, a true gentleman. Marcus was in tears. We were all in shock,” he posted on Facebook. The father and son got whisked to a special area afterward, where the Mariners swapped the ball for an autographed bat. “To this kind gentleman—thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Galan wrote. “My son will forever be indebted to you, and I hope he pays it forward someday. The lesson: Always be kind.”

The team didn’t stop there. On Thursday, they invited Mutti-Driscoll and his family back to the ballpark to meet Raleigh on the field before the next game. “Before today’s game, Cal met up with the Mariners fan who caught No. 60 and handed it off to another young fan… You love to see it,” the Mariners posted on X (formerly Twitter). Raleigh signed a bat for Mutti-Driscoll with the message: “Glenn, Thanks for being a good guy & nice catch!” He also autographed two baseballs for the fan’s own kids and posed for photos by the dugout.

This series against the Rockies helped the Mariners clinch their first playoff spot since 2001 and boosted Raleigh’s case as the top contender for American League MVP. He’s now the seventh player in MLB history to reach 60 home runs in one season. Galan Ruelos summed it up perfectly: “When my son remembers this milestone, he’ll cherish the moment someone was kind to him and gifted that ball.”

Mutti-Driscoll’s gesture stands in sharp contrast to a viral meltdown earlier this month at a Phillies-Marlins game. There, an angry female fan yelled at Drew Feltwell until he handed over a home run ball he’d caught for his son, who was celebrating his birthday. Feltwell gave it up to calm things down, but the internet roasted the woman for her outburst. Social media users couldn’t help but compare the two. “A certain Phillies fan, please take notice…” one wrote on X. Another added, “That’s the kind of play that never shows up on a box score but wins hearts forever. Class act by the fan & Cal.”
