Leonardo DiCaprio is all about the magic of movie theaters these days, even as streaming platforms keep growing in popularity. The Oscar-winning actor says the box office still plays a huge role in the film industry because it brings people together for that shared cinema experience.
In a recent chat with Variety, DiCaprio explained, “There’s just so much content out there right now, and that’s a great thing. But box office matters because it means folks are heading to theaters to watch together.”
He’s starring in the upcoming action thriller One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The cast includes heavy hitters like Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti. DiCaprio calls the film “uniquely crafted” just for the big screen, according to Female First.
Paul shot the movie using Vista Vision cameras—tech that’s barely been touched since the early 1960s. “He wants viewers to feel fully immersed in an action flick that’s fresh, hands-on, and real—different from all the stuff we’re flooded with online,” DiCaprio said. That’s why he’s pushing fans to catch One Battle After Another in theaters, not on their couches at home.
“I just hope people head to the theater and see it the way it’s meant to be experienced,” he added.
DiCaprio has long been a Hollywood powerhouse, but he recently opened up about a quirky early career hurdle on the New Heights podcast. His first agent warned him that his name sounded “too ethnic” for the industry and might hold him back.
“I said, ‘What do you mean? It’s Leonardo DiCaprio.’ They replied, ‘No, too ethnic. They’ll never hire you,'” DiCaprio recalled.
The agent even suggested a stage name: Lenny Williams, tweaking his middle name Wilhelm into a last name. “I asked, ‘What is Lenny?’ They said, ‘We took your middle name and made it your last name. Now you’re Lenny.'”
Luckily, DiCaprio stuck with his real name and became one of the biggest stars around.
