India’s Yuki Bhambri Makes History at US Open!
Yuki Bhambri from India has achieved a huge milestone by reaching his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal in men’s doubles at the US Open. Partnering with New Zealand’s Michael Venus, Bhambri showed great skill and determination to beat top-ranked opponents and keep his dreams alive in New York.
In a thrilling match on Wednesday, the Indian-Kiwi team upset the 11th-seeded duo of Nikola Mektic from Croatia and Rajeev Ram from the USA. They fought hard to win in three sets—6-3, 6-7(8), 6-3—on Court 17, securing their spot in the semifinals.
For 33-year-old Yuki Bhambri, this is a historic moment. Once ranked No. 1 in the junior world and winner of the 2009 Australian Open boys’ singles title, Bhambri has battled injuries and shifted focus from singles to doubles over the years. Now, he has reached his best-ever result at a major tennis tournament, marking a major breakthrough in his career.
This victory adds to India’s proud tennis history. Bhambri and Venus are following in the footsteps of legendary Indian doubles players like Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Rohan Bopanna.
The match was intense from the start. Bhambri and Venus took an early lead with a smart return winner from Bhambri, making it 3-1. Despite some pressure, they held their nerve, with Bhambri finishing the first set with a powerful volley.
The second set saw a shaky start for Bhambri, who lost his serve early, helping their opponents level the score. Despite fighting back to 4-4, the Indo-Kiwi pair lost the set in a close tiebreak, with Bhambri double-faulting at a crucial moment.
But Bhambri and Venus didn’t give up. In the final set, they played tough tennis, especially when Mektic served at 4-3. Bhambri saved a break point with a brilliant backhand, and then they capitalized on their chances, winning the decisive break of serve. Despite a tough challenge when serving for the match, they held their nerve and finished strong, winning when Ram’s return hit the net.
Now, Yuki Bhambri and Michael Venus will take on the sixth-seeded British pair of Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski in the semifinals. They aim to keep their winning streak alive and reach their first Grand Slam final together.
Earlier, Bhambri and Venus had also defeated the fourth-seeded team of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in the earlier rounds, making their US Open run even more remarkable.
