India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal led a high-level delegation to the United States from September 22 to 24, 2025, where they held promising talks to boost trade and investment ties between the two nations. The Commerce Ministry shared these updates in a statement on Friday.
Goyal met with key US officials, including United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador-designate to India. Their discussions focused on the ongoing Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations, with both sides sharing ideas on the deal’s shape. They agreed to keep the momentum going for a quick wrap-up of a trade pact that works well for India and the US.
The delegation also connected with top US businesses and investors, who gave a thumbs-up to India’s booming economy. These leaders showed strong faith in the “India growth story” and voiced eagerness to ramp up their investments and operations in the Indian market.
This visit comes amid heated India-US trade talks that kicked off in March 2025, with a goal to finish the first phase of the BTA by October or November. Tensions have risen lately, though—US President Donald Trump slapped 25% tariffs on Indian goods in July, dashing hopes for an interim deal to dodge higher costs. Just days later, he added another 25% tariff over India’s imports of Russian oil, pushing the total to 50% starting August 27.
India remains cautious about US pushes to open its sensitive agriculture and dairy sectors, which support millions of livelihoods. Still, these recent meetings signal fresh optimism for a fair, balanced India-US trade deal that could ease tariff pressures and strengthen economic bonds.
