Jaipur’s city council meeting turned into a wild showdown on Friday, as opposition Congress members clashed with the ruling BJP over what to discuss. The eighth general body session of the Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation started at 12:15 p.m., but chaos erupted just two hours in, forcing officials to shut it down indefinitely.
The official plan was to talk about GST reforms and the central government’s push for One Nation, One Election. But Congress councillors had other ideas—they wanted the focus on Jaipur’s everyday problems, like shaky water supply, crumbling roads, and poor sanitation.
Tensions boiled over right from the start. As talks on GST kicked off, Congress opposition leader Rajiv Chaudhary jumped in and called it out of place. “If we’re debating GST, let’s do it in a park,” he said. “This house needs to tackle the city’s real development issues.”
BJP councillors fired back with loud cheers for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, drowning out the debate. Things heated up even more when Congress Deputy Leader Bharat Meghwal tried to highlight facts on Jaipur’s civic woes. Mayor Soumya Gurjar cut him off mid-sentence, sparking fury among the opposition.
Congress members accused the mayor of muzzling their voices, claiming BJP speakers got plenty of time while they got none. After a quick 10-minute break, the session restarted, but the shouting only got louder. In a dramatic move, Congress councillor Karan Sharma ripped up a resolution copy and stormed out, with his party mates joining in chants against the ruling side.
The outburst exposed sharp divides in the Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation, where both Congress and BJP pointed fingers at each other for blocking real progress on city governance. BJP defended sticking to the agenda, while Congress slammed the meeting as just another political stage, ignoring what Jaipur residents actually need.
With no new date set to resume, key talks on GST reforms, One Nation One Election, and local fixes like better water supply and roads in Jaipur remain on hold.
