“Deal that will end the war”: Trump on Gaza conflict

US President Donald Trump voiced strong optimism Friday about a potential breakthrough in the Gaza conflict, telling reporters on the White House South Lawn that a deal looks close.

“It’s looking like we have a deal on Gaza,” Trump said. “I think it’s a deal that will get the hostages back. It’s gonna be a deal that will end the war.”

Trump shared this update amid ongoing efforts to resolve the Israel-Hamas war. Earlier this week, at the United Nations General Assembly, he presented a 21-point initiative to Arab leaders. The plan outlines how to run and rebuild Gaza once fighting stops, with a focus on reconstruction and stability.

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu struck a different tone. Speaking at the UN, he insisted Israel must finish the job of wiping out Hamas. “The final remnants of Hamas are holed up in Gaza City,” Netanyahu said. “They vow to repeat the atrocities of Oct. 7. That is why Israel must finish the job. That is why we want to do so as fast as possible.”

Netanyahu’s comments highlight a clear contrast with Trump’s hope for a quick resolution. The proposed deal, mediated by Qatar and backed by the US, has hit snags after Israel targeted Hamas leaders in a bombing in Doha.

On Monday, Netanyahu heads to the White House for a meeting with Trump. The US president plans to brief him on talks with Gulf and Arab leaders about the 21-point Gaza plan. Trump has also reassured those leaders that he won’t let Israel annex the West Bank, even as the country expands settlements and tightens security control there.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces push deeper into Gaza City, which Netanyahu calls Hamas’s last stronghold. The advance raises serious humanitarian worries, with widespread civilian displacement in the area.

The conflict erupted after Hamas’s surprise attack on October 7, 2023, which killed about 1,200 people in Israel. Israel’s response has led to over 64,000 Palestinian deaths, according to reports. As talks continue, the world watches closely for any signs of progress in ending the Gaza war and securing the release of hostages.
