Kolkata, September 4 – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared her heartfelt condolences on Thursday morning after the passing of Kishwar Jahan, the mother of Rizwanur Rahman. Rizwanur, a talented graphic designer, died under mysterious circumstances in 2007, a case that shook the political landscape of West Bengal and eventually contributed to the end of the 34-year Left Front rule.
Rizwanur Rahman’s death was a major controversy at the time. Reports suggested he was found dead near a railway track in Kolkata just days after his marriage to Priyanka Todi, the daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi, who was then unmarried. Many believed Rizwanur’s death was not a simple suicide but a case of foul play, sparking protests and raising questions about police and political involvement.
During the investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) looked into the case, examining claims that powerful figures might have been involved. Several Kolkata Police officers, including the then police commissioner and deputy commissioners, also came under scrutiny. Despite widespread public suspicion and demands for justice, the CBI could not conclusively prove it was a murder.
The Rizwanur Rahman tragedy created deep cracks within West Bengal’s political scene. It shook many voters, especially among minority communities, and was a key factor in the downfall of the Left Front government in 2011. Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress then came to power, promising to bring change and justice.
On Thursday, Mamata Banerjee expressed her sorrow over the death of Kishwar Jahan, who was 81 years old. Sharing her feelings on social media, she said she had a personal connection with Kishwar Jahan, who loved her like family. Mamata recalled visiting her during Eid and shared how many memories from those times come flooding back. She extended her deepest condolences to Rukbanur Rahman, a Trinamool Congress MLA since 2011, and to the entire family.
Mamata also highlighted her emotional bond with Kishwar Jahan, saying she will remain in her heart forever. The passing of Kishwar Jahan marks the end of a chapter for many in West Bengal, remembering the pain and hope tied to Rizwanur Rahman’s tragic story.
