India fired back hard at Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the 80th United Nations General Assembly on Friday. In a sharp response, Indian diplomat Petal Gahlot accused Sharif of putting on a show that glorified terrorism and twisted the facts about a recent military clash between the two nations.
Gahlot, serving as First Secretary at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN, used India’s right of reply to call out Sharif’s speech. She mocked his claim that Pakistan scored a win in the May escalation, pointing out that Indian forces had wrecked several Pakistani airbases on May 10. “Till May 9, Pakistan threatened more attacks on India,” Gahlot said. “But on May 10, its military begged us to stop the fighting. The reason? Indian strikes that destroyed their airbases. If bombed runways and burned hangars count as victory, Pakistan can keep celebrating that.”
She didn’t stop there. Gahlot slammed Pakistan for protecting terrorist groups, like The Resistance Front, which India links to the brutal Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. That massacre killed 26 tourists. Just days before Sharif’s speech, on April 25, 2025, Pakistan shielded the group at the UN Security Council, she noted.
Gahlot dug deeper into Pakistan’s track record on terrorism. She reminded everyone how Pakistan hid Osama bin Laden for a decade while pretending to fight terror alongside the world. Pakistani officials have even admitted to running terrorist camps for years. “This duplicity shows up again in their Prime Minister’s words,” she said.
India’s response also touched on Operation Sindoor, where Indian forces targeted terror hideouts in Bahawalpur and Muridke. Photos of the strikes show the damage, and Gahlot highlighted how top Pakistani military and civilian leaders honored the terrorists killed there. “When they publicly praise these killers, it says everything about their regime,” she added.
Gahlot made India’s stance crystal clear: zero tolerance for terrorism. “Pakistan bears responsibility for attacks on innocent Indians, just like before,” she stated. “We’ve defended our people and brought the culprits to justice.” She urged Pakistan to shut down all terrorist camps right away and hand over wanted terrorists. India won’t back down from accountability, even in the face of nuclear threats, she warned.
Sharif had called for peace with India in his address, but Gahlot questioned if he meant it. “If he’s serious, the path is simple: Close the camps and extradite the terrorists,” she said. She also called out Pakistan’s culture of hate and intolerance, suggesting its leaders look in the mirror before lecturing the world on faith.
Finally, Gahlot reaffirmed India’s position on resolving issues with Pakistan. “We handle our disputes bilaterally—no third parties allowed,” she said. This exchange at the UN underscores the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions, especially around cross-border terrorism and military standoffs.
