Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia shared his deep sadness on Friday over the death of Zubeen Garg, the beloved singer and cultural star of Assam. Scindia, who is in Guwahati for a two-day tour of the Northeast, praised how Garg’s powerful voice and songs brought people together across Assam, the entire Northeast region, and India.
“His work will stay with us forever, and the music world will miss him greatly,” Scindia said.
Meanwhile, Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) stepped up its probe into Zubeen Garg’s drowning in Singapore last week. The CID sent notices to people who were there during the incident or know details about it. They must show up within 10 days to give statements, a top officer confirmed.
A 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Special DGP M.P. Gupta, is handling the Zubeen Garg death investigation. “We’re serving notices to everyone linked to the events before his passing. They need to talk to our team soon,” the officer added.
SIT members raided the home of Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organizer of the North East India Festival, for the second day in a row. Earlier, they searched the houses of Garg’s manager, Siddhartha Sharma, and musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami. Both men joined the singer on a yacht trip in Singapore on September 19, the day he drowned.
The investigation now covers Assamese community members in Singapore who were on the yacht. On Friday, the CID in Guwahati also took statements from other artists and figures from Assam’s cultural scene.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma promised earlier that if the SIT’s work doesn’t meet public demands, the state will push to hand the case over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
