Gauhati University is paying tribute to Assam’s beloved singer and cultural star Zubeen Garg, who died recently, with exciting new initiatives to keep his legacy alive.
The university plans to rename its Centre for Performing Arts and Culture as the Zubeen Garg Centre for Performing Arts and Culture. This honors his huge impact on music and Assam’s traditions. They’ll also build a statue of the icon and release a colorful coffee table book that dives into his amazing life and songs.
Plus, the Inter-College Youth Festival will now include a special “Zubeen Garg Song” section. This lets young performers keep his tunes front and center for years to come.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta shared his thoughts: “Zubeen Garg wasn’t just an artist—he was an emotion that brought Assam together and spoke to people’s hearts. These steps let us keep his creative fire burning and motivate the next generation to embrace his music, bravery, and pride in our culture.”
Through these moves, Gauhati University shows its dedication to celebrating one of Assam’s greatest cultural heroes, making sure his spirit echoes on.
Meanwhile, Assam’s government has stepped up to investigate Zubeen Garg’s death. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for a full, transparent look into what happened. He led a meeting with top police and officials to set it up.
Sarma stressed that the team includes Assam Police’s top talent and will operate on its own with full honesty. “We won’t leave any stone unturned,” he told the public.
Special DGP (CID) M.P. Gupta leads the SIT, with SSP (CM Vigilance) Rosie Kalita as the chief investigator. The group also features additional SPs, deputy SPs, inspectors, and sub-inspectors from CID and other areas. Everyone stays committed until the probe wraps up.
