The Global Chess League is gearing up for its third season, and fans are buzzing about the Alpine SG Pipers’ powerhouse team. This year, the league makes history by landing in India for the first time—from December 13 to 24 in New Delhi, a hotspot for chess lovers and rising talents.
At the heart of the Pipers are two stars who stuck around from last season: Indian sensation R Praggnanandhaa, who snagged Player of the Season honors, and Hou Yifan, the world’s top-ranked female player. Their skills and big wins last year set a strong tone for what’s ahead.
The team just revealed four fresh faces to boost their roster with global pros and young guns. Leading the charge is Fabiano Caruana, the U.S. grandmaster and former World Championship contender, stepping in as the Icon Player. Anish Giri, a steady force among top grandmasters, joins as Superstar Men. From Georgia, Nino Batsiashvili brings her Olympic gold medal vibe as Superstar Women. And don’t sleep on Leon Luke Mendonca, the Indian prodigy famous for his bold, creative plays.
Coach Pravin Thipsay of the Alpine SG Pipers shared his excitement: “We’re thrilled with this squad for Season 3. Fabiano Caruana adds serious firepower as our Icon Player—one of the world’s best.
