BSNL has rolled out its homegrown Swadesh 4G Network, known as the Bharat Telecom Stack, bringing high-speed internet to more than 26,700 villages across India for the very first time. The launch happened in New Delhi on September 27, marking a big step toward connecting rural areas with reliable 4G services.
This intelligent network comes entirely from Indian innovation, thanks to teamwork between BSNL, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), and Tejas Networks. It offers a modern, secure telecom solution designed to handle 4G and future upgrades all on its own.
With this move, India joins just four other countries that have created a fully self-reliant telecom technology stack. TCS led the charge as part of a key mission, setting up data centers, installing C-DOT’s core applications, and deploying Tejas’s base stations and radio gear across over 100,000 sites. They also use TCS’s smart Cognitive Network Operations platform to keep everything running smoothly around the clock.
Now, over 22 million people in remote spots can tap into affordable 4G data. This opens doors to exciting options like online education, smart farming tools, and round-the-clock telemedicine right in villages. It’s a game-changer for everyday life in rural India.
BSNL’s Chairman and Managing Director, A. Robert J. Ravi, called it a huge win for national pride. “Today, we celebrate a monumental achievement. The nationwide rollout of our indigenous 4G network, built with TCS, Tejas Networks, and C-DOT, shouts Atmanirbhar Bharat from the rooftops,” he said. The project draws straight from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of a digitally linked, self-sufficient India.
N. Ganapathy Subramaniam, TCS’s advisor on telecom initiatives and chairman of Tejas Networks, shared the excitement too. “We’re thrilled to place India among the elite few nations with a complete, trusted, and upgradable telecom stack. This BSNL rollout is historic—it delivers powerful data and voice networks to every corner of the country.” He added that it shows TCS’s ongoing dedication to strengthening India’s digital backbone and fueling its tech ambitions.
