The New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships kicked off with an exciting morning session on Day 1, drawing huge crowds to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Netherlands grabbed the lead in the medal tally, snagging two gold medals right out of the gate. Poland kept pace with two medals total—one gold and one bronze—while China, Colombia, Japan, and the UAE each celebrated a single gold.

Chinese star para-athlete Wen Xiaoyan shone bright in the Women’s Long Jump T37 final, earning gold with an impressive leap of 5.32 meters on her fifth try. This win adds yet another honor to her already stacked resume in para athletics.

Seven medal events wrapped up in the morning, setting a fast pace for the championships. Japan’s Kenya Karasawa made history for his country by claiming the first gold in the Men’s 5000m T11 race. He crossed the finish line in 15:23.38, edging out Brazil’s Yeltsin Jacques, who took gold in the same event at last year’s Paralympics.

For India, the big moment came from runner Deepthi Jeevanji, who topped her heat to qualify first for the women’s 400m T20 final. She has a shot at grabbing India’s first medal of the championships when she races in the evening session—fans are buzzing with anticipation.

In another standout performance, UAE’s Thekra Alkaabi smashed the world record and Asian record in the women’s 100m T71, clocking a blazing 19.89 seconds.

This massive event, running from September 27 to October 5, brings together more than 2,200 para-athletes from 104 countries for 186 medal events. It’s the biggest para-athletics competition ever held in India and doubles as a key qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympics, highlighting the country’s push for inclusive sports and top-tier excellence.
