India’s first bullet train project is speeding ahead, with the full Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor set to open by 2029. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this update on Saturday after checking progress at the under-construction Surat station in Gujarat.

Vaishnaw pointed out that the 50-km stretch between Surat and Bilimora will be ready for passengers by 2027. He added that by 2028, the section from Thane to Ahmedabad will come online, paving the way for the entire 508-km line to launch a year later. “The overall progress of this first bullet train project is very good,” Vaishnaw said.

Imagine zipping from Mumbai to Ahmedabad in just two hours and seven minutes—compared to the nine hours Google Maps suggests for the current trip. That’s the promise of this game-changing bullet train, which will cut travel time dramatically and boost connections between these bustling cities.

Safety comes first in this high-speed rail venture. Vaishnaw highlighted advanced features like vibration absorption along the tracks, plus special designs to withstand high winds and earthquakes. At Surat station, heavy construction wrapped up, and teams now focus on finishing touches, utilities, and linking the tracks. They even installed the first turnout—where tracks split or merge—using cutting-edge tech such as roller bearings and composite sleepers.

The main tracks will handle speeds up to 320 km per hour, while loop lines top out at 80 km per hour. Trains will run every half-hour during busy morning and evening peaks, and once the network settles in, expect one every 10 minutes in rush hours.

This Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor isn’t just about fast rides—it’s poised to link economies along the route and drive regional growth, much like Japan’s high-speed rail did decades ago. Vaishnaw also teased plans for four more bullet train lines across India, as promised in the BJP manifesto. Excitement is building for how this infrastructure push will transform travel in the country.
