World shocked by violence unleashed on Sanatan Dharma followers in Bangladesh: Former PM Hasina

Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has voiced deep concern over the ongoing violence against the Hindu community, blaming the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government for unleashing attacks on religious minorities since August 2024. In a statement shared on the Bangladesh Awami League’s social media, Hasina described the situation as a “horrific time of persecution” that’s shocking the world.

Hasina, now in exile, extended warm Durga Puja greetings to Sanatan Dharma followers in Bangladesh. She highlighted how the festival brings people together through rituals, prayers, and shared cultural joys that go beyond religion or caste. “In the past, Durga Puja in Bangladesh was mostly celebrated within families, but now community barowari Pujas are more common,” she noted. Despite the turmoil, she wished everyone a blessed Sharad season and good health.

She painted a picture of a united Bangladesh where people support each other with love and compassion. But Hasina warned that “conspirators and bigoted groups” are now holding the nation hostage, playing divisive politics that threatens to destroy the country. The Awami League, she said, will stand firm against it.

Looking ahead, Hasina expressed hope that Durga Puja celebrations would bring joy and drive away evil forces. “The Bangladesh of tomorrow will once again be a land of communal harmony and religious diversity in celebration. In every joy and sorrow, we will remain by each other’s side,” she added.

This comes amid fresh reports of attacks on Hindu temples and idol vandalism during Durga Puja preparations. Earlier this week, the Awami League slammed the Yunus regime, calling it illegitimate and accusing it of fostering killings targeting Hindus and other minorities. “Since this group seized power, Bangladesh has become unsafe for people of all faiths,” the party stated.

The Awami League raised alarms about a “new form of mob terror” backed by the interim government, leading to assaults on shrines, mosques, temples, and anyone outside the attackers’ beliefs. Hasina’s comments underscore growing fears for religious minorities in Bangladesh amid political unrest.
