The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is set to host its annual Vijayadashami celebration in Amravati, Maharashtra, on October 5, and they’ve chosen a special guest to lead the event. Kamaltai Gavai, the mother of India’s Chief Justice BR Gavai, will join as the chief guest at 6:30 p.m.
Kamaltai comes from a prominent family in the Ambedkarite movement. She’s the wife of the late RS Gavai, who served as a governor and rose as a key leader in Vidarbha’s Republican politics. RS Gavai also headed the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Smarak Samiti at Deekshabhoomi, where he helped construct the iconic Buddhist memorial. Their son, Rajendra Gavai, now sits on that committee.
This year’s Vijayadashami event kicks off the RSS centenary celebrations, running from 2025 to 2026. Founded in 1925 by KB Hedgewar in Nagpur, the RSS marks its 100th year this time around. Over the decades, it has expanded into one of the world’s biggest volunteer groups, with daily shakhas—local gatherings—spanning India and even reaching communities abroad.
The invitation highlights the RSS’s ties to influential figures and its role in cultural events like Vijayadashami, drawing attention from across Maharashtra and beyond. ()
