Heartbreaking stories are emerging from Karur in Tamil Nadu, where a stampede at actor Vijay’s campaign rally for his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party turned a lively event into tragedy on September 28. Several people died in the chaos, including a two-year-old boy, leaving families shattered and questioning how it all went so wrong.

Vimal, father of little Guru Vishnu, shared his unbearable pain with . His son had gone to the rally with his grandmother and neighbors. “When Vijay arrived, the lights went out,” Vimal said, his voice breaking. “As everyone pushed to get closer, the stampede hit. My boy was with my mom, and I was stuck at work. I didn’t see my phone until evening. By then, they’d rushed him to the hospital, but it was too late. Losing him like this—I just can’t put it into words.”

The family of Maheswari, another victim, described a desperate fight for survival. She died trying to protect her daughters and grandchild amid the crushing crowd. Her son Prasanth explained, “Mom had visited the temple and paused to catch Vijay’s campaign speech. The surge pulled her in when she went to help my sister and her kid.”

Maheswari’s daughter, who made it out alive, relived the horror. “I tumbled near Vijay’s vehicle with my sister,” she said through tears. “Mom rushed to pull us free, but she got trapped too. I couldn’t breathe for over an hour, fighting to escape. Right there, I watched the crowd stomp on her chest and throat. If rescuers had arrived faster, she might still be with us.”

Her husband, Sakthivel, vented frustration at the rally organizers. “Why pack so many people into such a tight spot?” he asked. “My wife got crushed under all those feet. What’s the use of any political win if it costs lives like this?”

In response to the Tamil Nadu stampede tragedy, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Congress MP S. Jothimani, and former Minister V. Senthil Balaji visited the grieving families. They pledged Rs 10 lakh in compensation to each victim’s kin to offer some support during this devastating time.
