Indians living in Iceland laced up their running shoes and joined a special event to support India’s future. On Sunday, September 28, about 50 members of the Indian diaspora and their friends took part in the Viksit Bharat Run in Reykjavik. The Indian Embassy there organized the 3-5 km community run to inspire everyone to help build a self-reliant and developed India by 2047.
India’s Ambassador to Iceland, R. Ravindra, kicked things off with a speech to the group. He led them in taking the Viksit Bharat pledge, a commitment to India’s growth. Ravindra highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision from his 2025 Independence Day address, focusing on self-reliance, innovation, and empowering everyday people.
After the run wrapped up, the ambassador handed out participation certificates to all the runners. The event fits into the bigger picture of the Viksit Bharat Run 2025, a global push by India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, working with the Ministry of External Affairs. They’re hosting runs in more than 150 spots across 91 countries during Seva Pakhwada, from September 17 to October 2. It’s the first time India has launched such a worldwide initiative to rally people for nation-building.
The goal? Unite Indians abroad with local communities, students, professionals, and India supporters to recommit to Viksit Bharat. With the tagline “Run to Serve the Nation,” these fun, accessible runs happen at famous landmarks around the world—like Mexico City’s Angel of Independence, Suriname’s UNESCO site in Paramaribo, and San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.
According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, this Viksyat Bharat Run stands out as one of India’s biggest global efforts yet. It’s more than just exercise; it’s a celebration of service (Seva Bhav), sustainability, and inclusivity. The runs aim to build stronger ties between India and its diaspora, get young people involved in community service, and showcase India’s exciting growth story to the world.
