The death toll from a tragic stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s campaign rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has climbed to 41. A 65-year-old woman named Suguna from the Karur district passed away in the hospital after days on a ventilator in intensive care.
Among those who lost their lives, 18 were women, 13 men, five young girls, and five young boys. Most victims—34 in total—came from Karur district. Two each hailed from the nearby Erode, Tiruppur, and Dindigul districts, with one from Salem.
The chaos erupted Saturday evening when a huge crowd gathered for the rally organized by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay’s political party. Overcrowding sparked panic, leading to a stampede where several people fainted and needed urgent hospital care.
Vijay, the TVK chief, shared his heartbreak in an emotional post on X (formerly Twitter). He said the faces of the victims keep haunting him and announced Rs 2 million in financial aid for each bereaved family, plus Rs 200,000 for the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped in with support too. He pledged Rs 200,000 from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of those who died in the Karur stampede. Injured victims will get Rs 50,000 each, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also promised help, offering Rs 1 million to families of the deceased and Rs 100,000 to each person receiving treatment for injuries from the rally stampede.
Authorities continue to investigate the overcrowding that turned a lively political event into a heartbreaking disaster.
