Retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan, leading the probe into the tragic Karur stampede in Tamil Nadu, visited the Government Medical College and Hospital on Sunday. She shared good news with reporters: all the injured people are doing fine now and receiving top-notch care.

Justice Jagadeesan heads the one-member enquiry commission set up by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to investigate the deadly incident at a rally led by TVK chief and actor Vijay. Before heading to Karur, she told the media the commission aims to fix any shortcomings. “We want to ensure nothing like this happens again, and we’ll recommend steps to make that possible,” she said.

The chaos erupted on Saturday when a huge crowd at Vijay’s rally in Karur turned into a panic. Overcrowding at the venue sparked the stampede, with many attendees fainting and needing urgent hospital treatment.

By Sunday, Karur Collector M Thangavel confirmed at least 40 people had died in the Karur stampede. He spoke at a press conference alongside ADGP (Law and Order) S Davidson Devasirvatham. Emergency teams rushed in to help, and hospitals added more beds to handle the rush of patients.

The collector added that Chief Minister Stalin arrived on the scene that night and quickly ordered the best possible treatment for everyone hurt. He also announced compensation: Rs 10 lakh for each family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for those injured in the stampede. A help desk is now open at the hospital, and the Tamil Nadu government is working hard to prevent any more deaths.

Vijay, the politician and actor at the center of the rally, stepped up too. He pledged Rs 20 lakh for each bereaved family and Rs 2 lakh for the injured victims.
