Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is set to transfer Rs 489 crore to over 20,652 non-government schools today. This money reimburses schools for admitting students from economically weaker sections (EWS) under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.
The funds will hit the schools’ bank accounts with just one click during a public event in Dhar district. School Education Minister Uday Pratap Singh will join Yadav there.
These schools earned the grant by reserving at least 25% of entry-level seats—like Class 1 or nursery—for kids from disadvantaged groups. The transfer covers fees for about 8.45 lakh children enrolled in the 2023-2024 school year.
Yadav’s program goes beyond the funds. He’ll kick off new developmental projects with a traditional bhoomi-poojan ceremony and hand out welfare benefits to families in need.
Since Madhya Pradesh rolled out the RTE Act in 2011-12, around 19 lakh children have gained free access to quality education. The state has already reimbursed Rs 3,000 crore in school fees.
The national RTE Act, passed in 2009, pushes private unaided schools to open 25% of their starting-class spots to EWS and disadvantaged kids. In return, state governments like Madhya Pradesh cover the costs, helping ensure kids from all backgrounds learn together and get a fair shot at education.
