A political party in exile, the United Kashmir People National Party (UKPNP), has made an urgent call to the world after Pakistan cut off internet and phone services across Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The group says this communication blackout in PoJK is no accident—it’s Pakistan’s way of muzzling peaceful protests and keeping the region cut off from the outside world as tensions boil over.
The shutdown hits right as the Joint Awami Action Committee ramps up a major protest movement. They’re organizing a full shutter-down and wheel-jam strike on Monday, with demonstrators pushing hard for basic human rights, economic fairness, and an end to years of political crackdowns in PoJK and Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB).
UKPNP points out that Pakistan has sent in paramilitary Rangers and extra security forces to the area, sparking fears of a brutal response. They highlight the deadly clash on May 13, 2024, in Muzaffarabad, where Rangers fired on unarmed protesters, killing three people. No one’s investigated that shooting yet, and it shows how security forces there often act without consequences.
This isn’t just a one-off protest, UKPNP stresses—it’s tied to the bigger Jammu and Kashmir conflict that’s lingered on the UN’s radar since 1948. People in PoJK and PoGB face ongoing hardships, from denied freedom of speech and movement to losing control over their own resources and any say in self-governance.
In their appeal, UKPNP urges the United Nations, United States, United Kingdom, European Union, China, Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and other global powers to step in fast and stop any more violence. They want the world to finally hear the voices of PoJK and PoGB residents, who’ve been fighting for justice and respect since 1947.
