Forecast for likely rain in Kolkata from Wednesday

Kolkata’s Durga Puja celebrations are getting a welcome break from the recent downpours, with clear skies expected for the next two days. After weeks of rain dampening the festive mood, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts mostly sunny weather in the city through Tuesday, boosting the joy for Ashtami festivities.
But don’t get too comfortable—things could turn wet again soon. Starting Wednesday night on Navami, rain is set to return, and Thursday’s Dashami, the final day of Durga Puja, might see heavy showers across Kolkata.
An official from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore shared the details: “We had clear skies yesterday with just a couple of light rain spells. Expect the same today and tomorrow—no heavy rain in sight. But a low-pressure system brewing in the Bay of Bengal will bring rain starting Wednesday night. Heavy downpours look likely on Thursday and Friday.”
For the rest of South Bengal, Monday stays mostly dry, though scattered light to moderate rain could pop up. Watch for thunderstorms and lightning in South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, and Jhargram districts.
On Tuesday during Ashtami, thunderstorms might hit East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia. Other South Bengal areas could see scattered light to moderate rain.
Up in North Bengal, Monday brings possible thunderstorms in parts of South Dinajpur and Malda. Rain is forecast for Tuesday in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda. After Dashami, heavy rain threatens nearly all northern districts.
The IMD points to a cyclonic circulation forming in the North Andaman Sea on Ashtami, which could strengthen into a low-pressure area by Navami. This setup means rain and thunderstorms for all South Bengal districts, including Kolkata, on Navami and Dashami.
Fishermen, take note: Rough seas ahead in the north and central Bay of Bengal near Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh coasts. Authorities advise staying ashore on Thursday and Friday to avoid risks. Keep an eye on these Kolkata weather updates and West Bengal rain forecasts to plan your Durga Puja safely.
