Kolkata’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is staying vigilant from her home amid rain threats looming over Durga Puja celebrations. Government officials shared on Monday that Banerjee keeps a close watch on the emergency situation, even as she skips the State Secretariat.
She chats daily with Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and other top administrators, sources from the State Secretariat confirm. A senior official noted that Banerjee runs the show from her residence to track developments across West Bengal.
Just last week, heavy rains battered Kolkata, causing widespread chaos in the city. Now, the Meteorological Office warns of more trouble—a fresh low-pressure system could unleash heavy showers during Durga Puja. It might turn into a depression by Navami on Wednesday, sparking downpours on Thursday and Friday.
Fishermen in West Bengal and Odisha got the heads-up to steer clear of the sea starting October 1, thanks to expected rough conditions.
From her base at home, Banerjee issues constant directives to officials, aiming to keep everyone safe and comfortable during the festival. She wants Durga Puja to wrap up peacefully, with no mishaps.
To handle any crises, authorities have ramped up preparations. They launched a control room on September 26, running through October 7 for Durga Puja. It will stick around for Kali Puja from October 20 to 24 and Chhath Puja on October 27 and 28.
A secretary-level officer mans the room around the clock, with staff pulling two shifts for nonstop monitoring. The setup covers everything from weather updates to law and order issues.
With crowds flocking to Kolkata’s vibrant puja pandals, the focus stays sharp on rain forecasts. Officials have rolled out solid arrangements, and government teams remain on high alert to ensure a smooth festival season.
