India’s push toward clean energy is gaining speed. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced that 20 lakh homes across the country now run on solar power thanks to the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. This scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, helps families cut down on high electricity bills while building a greener future.
In a recent post on X, Joshi celebrated the milestone, crediting Modi’s leadership. “Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji, 20 lakh homes are now solar-powered under the @PMSuryaGhar Muft Bijli Yojana,” he wrote. “Lighting lives, saving costs, and powering a sustainable future.” He added that this marks another big win in India’s clean energy revolution.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana targets installing solar panels on rooftops in 1 crore homes nationwide. It brings relief to middle-class and low-income families by slashing power costs. Plus, it supports India’s Green Energy Mission, protects the environment, and opens up new job opportunities in renewable energy.
Adding to the excitement, Dhordo village in Gujarat’s Kutch district has gone fully solar-powered. Known worldwide as the Best Tourism Village by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Dhordo joins the ranks of other solar villages in the state like Modhera in Mehsana, Sukhi in Kheda, and Masali in Banaskantha. This makes Gujarat a leader in sustainable energy.
Prime Minister Modi dedicated the achievement to the nation on September 20 at the Samudra Se Samriddhi event in Bhavnagar. Every home in Dhordo now generates its own electricity through solar connections. The project equipped 81 homes with rooftop solar panels, boosting the village’s capacity by 177 kilowatts. It’s a shining example of how solar power can transform communities.
