Calls grow for Pakistan to withdraw troops, end weaponisation of PoJK

Mahmood Kashmiri, chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir National Alliance (JKNIA), has slammed Pakistan for ramping up military presence in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). Speaking from London on October 1, he warned that these moves are fueling tensions in the already volatile region.

Kashmiri claims Pakistani armed forces have surrounded the area, posting troops at key entry points and handing out weapons to civilians. He calls this a risky strategy to stamp out peaceful protests. Reports of weapon distribution have surfaced in cities like Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot, according to him.

He ties these actions to recent violence in Muzaffarabad, where a thug from the Muslim Conference—supposedly with police help—killed two local soldiers and wounded others. Kashmiri points the finger at Muslim Conference leader Sardar Ateeq and demands his arrest right away, blaming him for the attacks.

Kashmiri stresses that the push for rights in PoJK stays peaceful, focused on law and dignity. “The people’s power is our biggest asset,” he says, adding that no army can silence their voices. He puts the blame squarely on Pakistan for any bloodshed from these weapons, not the local PoJK government, which he sees as too cozy with Islamabad.

In a strong warning to Pakistan, Kashmiri issues an ultimatum: Pull out troops from PoJK so residents can live in peace. He urges an end to any plots against peaceful protesters and vows zero tolerance for violence or meddling. “Stop interfering before it’s too late,” he adds.

Kashmiri lays out three key demands: Get Pakistani forces out of the region, honor the people’s rights movement, and nab Sardar Ateeq. He cautions that more militarization and arming civilians will only spark deeper unrest, and force won’t crush the peaceful resistance. He calls on Pakistan’s leaders to step up, start talks, and ease tensions to bring back calm.

On a different note, Syed Zeeshan Haider, vice president of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) PoJK unit, praised the Muzaffarabad protests in a post on X. “Muzaffarabad is ready to welcome convoys from all over Kashmir with open arms,” he wrote. “The people’s hospitality there will go down in history. Long live Muzaffarabad!”
