Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his heartbreak over the devastating earthquake that struck the Philippines, offering condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirming India’s support during this tough time.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Modi wrote: “Deeply saddened to learn about the loss of lives and widespread damage caused by the earthquake in the Philippines. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery. India stands in solidarity with the Philippines at this difficult time.”
The powerful 6.9-magnitude quake hit Cebu province in the central Philippines late Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction. According to the Philippines’ Office of Civil Defense, at least 69 people have died so far. The hardest-hit areas include Bogo City, where 30 lost their lives, Medellin town with 10 deaths, San Remigio town reporting 22 fatalities, Tabogon town with five, and one each in Sogod and Tabuelan towns.
Rescuers say most victims died when collapsing walls and buildings crushed them. Officials also reported at least 147 injuries, though details on the wounded and any missing remain unclear. Search and rescue teams keep digging through rubble in hopes of saving more survivors, and experts warn the death toll from the Philippines earthquake could climb higher.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology first pegged the quake at 6.7 magnitude, but later revised it to 6.9. It struck around 9:59 p.m. local time at a shallow depth of just 5 kilometers, which amplified the shaking. Tremors rippled through nearby provinces in central and southern Philippines, and the agency has logged more than 600 aftershocks since then.
As recovery efforts continue in the wake of this Cebu earthquake disaster, the world watches closely, with leaders like Modi stepping up to show global unity.
