In El Fasher, a city in western Sudan, a drone strike by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) hit a busy neighborhood on Wednesday, killing eight civilians and wounding several more. Volunteers from the local Coordination of Resistance Committees shared the grim details, saying the attack targeted a group of people in the Al-Daraja Al-Oula area west of the city.

An eyewitness described the chaos to Xinhua news agency: Five people died right away, and three others passed away later at the Saudi Hospital in El Fasher. Rescuers rushed about 12 injured folks to the hospital for treatment.

This strike comes amid Sudan’s brutal civil war, which pits the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against the RSF. On the same day, the army’s 6th Infantry Division announced they ambushed an RSF unit trying to sneak into El Fasher. Troops and their allies took out a bunch of fighters, including foreign mercenaries who worked as drone operators and electronic experts, according to the division’s statement.

Army-linked media shared videos showing the bodies of RSF fighters in the southern part of El Fasher. So far, the RSF hasn’t commented on the incident.

Fierce clashes have rocked El Fasher since May 10, 2024, with both sides ramping up attacks in recent days. The broader Sudan conflict exploded in April 2023 and shows no signs of stopping. It has claimed tens of thousands of lives, forced millions from their homes—many fleeing to other countries—and worsened a massive humanitarian crisis across the nation.
