Indian Railways is buzzing with excitement after launching the new Bairabi-Sairang railway line in Mizoram and kicking off freight operations from Molvom in Nagaland. Just weeks in, passengers and businesses are showing huge enthusiasm, proving how vital this rail network is for growth in Northeast India.
Passenger trains from Sairang station started rolling on September 13, 2025, and they’ve been packed right from the start. Travelers can’t get enough of the direct connections to major cities.
Take the Rajdhani Express to Delhi: Train No. 20507 from Sairang to Anand Vihar Terminal hit a stunning 162.5% occupancy. Its return trip, Train No. 20508, wasn’t far behind at 158.3%. Services to Guwahati are also thriving—Train No. 15609 from Guwahati to Sairang reached 100.1%, with the sleeper class completely sold out, and the reverse Train No. 15610 stayed near full capacity.
Even the new Kolkata routes are drawing crowds. Train No. 13126 from Sairang to Kolkata saw nearly 100% occupancy, while Train No. 13125 from Kolkata to Sairang jumped to 144.8%, including a whopping 144% in sleeper class. This surge highlights the real hunger for reliable rail links in Mizoram.
On the freight side, things are moving fast too. By September 30, 2025, eight full rakes had arrived at Sairang station. The very first one pulled in on September 14, loaded with 21 wagons of cement from near Guwahati. After that came three rakes of stone chips, one of automobiles, one of ready-mix concrete, and one of sand from Bairabi.
A fun first for parcels happened on September 19: A shipment of Anthurium flowers from Sairang headed to Delhi’s Anand Vihar Terminal via the Rajdhani Express parcel van. It’s a sign of how local goods can now reach bigger markets easily.
Over in Nagaland, Molvom station jumped into freight action this September. On September 24, the first inward rake arrived—41 wagons of cement straight from Telangana. Then, on September 29, the station sent out its debut outward rake: 42 wagons of stone chips bound for Jirania.
This boom in passenger and freight services is changing lives across Northeast India. It’s not just about easier travel—it’s opening doors to economic growth, better access for local products like flowers and stones, and fresh job opportunities in trade. Indian Railways continues to connect and empower the region.
