Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma dropped by the Bodoland Territorial Council oath‑taking ceremony in Kokrajhar on Sunday. The event marked the new Chief Executive Member, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) president Hagrama Mohilary, who won 28 of the 40 seats in the council’s recent election.
Debbarma, a key figure in the northeast’s tribal politics, tweeted his views on X and posted a photo of himself with Mohilary. He said he was pleased that the two leaders, both champions of regional unity, had campaigned together despite backlash from some quarters. “Regional unity and voice is a must,” the message read.
The BPF’s win ousted the United People’s Party-Liberal (UPPL) from power in the council. While Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says the BPF is a partner of the BJP‑led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), BPF chief Mohilary has warned that the alliance will stay out of the coalition if the UPPL remains a partner.
In Tripura, the political scene is equally dynamic. The ruling BJP and its ally, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), have been pushing hard to broaden their tribal support ahead of next year’s Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections. Since 2021, TMP has led the 30‑member TTAADC, which covers about two‑thirds of Tripura’s land and houses 84% of its population.
TMP has called for the deportation of illegal infiltrators and a 12‑hour shutdown in the state on October 13. The party also seeks a “Greater Tipraland,” a separate state for tribals under the Constitution, and fast‑track voting in village committee elections. In July and August, Debbarma and a TMP delegation met Delhi’s top officials, urging a Special Intensive Revision of Tripura’s electoral rolls, similar to a program in Bihar.
The alliance with the BJP formed in March after a tripartite agreement between the Centre, the Tripura government, and the opposition TMP. Two TMP members were inducted into the state ministry, adding a fresh dynamic to the politics of the region.
For readers following northeast India affairs, the close alignment between TMP, BPF, and the BJP highlights the growing importance of tribal parties in shaping state and national politics.
