In Tehran on Oct. 5, Iran’s foreign minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi said that Europe’s influence in future talks about Iran’s nuclear program has slipped.
Araghchi told reporters at a meeting of foreign ambassadors that the three European nations will play a much smaller role in any next‑stage negotiations. He argued that all countries now recognize Iran’s position, but that Western powers have caused the conflict.
The minister highlighted Iran’s long‑standing push for a fair and balanced solution. He slammed Western demands, saying they make diplomacy difficult and that the EU’s “snapback” sanctions—reinstated measures that trigger after a breach—have failed to resolve the issue.
“Irrational threats of military action and the use of snapback brought us no benefits,” Araghchi said. “The three European countries thought they held leverage, but the sanctions did nothing.”
Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to negotiate. He says Tehran wants its rights respected while staying open to any negotiated outcome that protects its sovereignty.
Earlier in September, Araghchi called attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities a “dark and perilous chapter” of the non‑proliferation regime.
During a joint meeting in New York with the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, he stressed that the goal is a diplomatic solution to the nuclear issue and to prevent tensions from escalating. All sides face a tough road ahead, but the minister remains confident that a negotiated settlement is possible.
