Bhubaneswar, Oct. 5 – Odisha’s chief minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, said he was “deeply sad” after a violent clash broke out in Cuttack during the Durga idol‑immersion ceremony on Friday night.
CM Majhi called the city “millennial” and a shining example of brotherhood. He warned that the unrest has disrupted everyday life and said the government will take strict action against the troublemakers. “We must keep Cuttack peaceful and united so its glory can shine on,” he added.
Opposition leader and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik also condemned the violence. In a social‑media post, he called the stone‑and‑bottle attack during the immersion “unacceptable” and urged calm. Patnaik blamed how pressure on police under the current administration has made law‑and‑order difficult.
The melee started on Sunday when members of several Hindu groups clashed with police during a protest rally at Dargha Bazar, the same spot where the Durga procession was attacked Friday night. A police officer told reporters that the rally had no permission from authorities. Protesters marched in from all parts of the city, shouted religious slogans, and when police asked them to leave, they pelting stones. Police eventually used batons to disperse the crowd.
In response to the violence, Odisha’s home department ordered a temporary internet shutdown on Oct. 5‑6. The ban covers social‑media sites such as WhatsApp, Facebook and X, as well as internet access in the Cuttack municipality, development authority and surrounding 42 mouzas, from 7 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Saturday.
The state government urges residents to stay peaceful, cooperate with law‑enforcement, and keep Cuttack’s tradition of harmony alive.
