Eight killed in ICU fire at SMS Hospital in Jaipur; CM orders probe

A deadly fire broke out in the ICU of Sawai Mansingh Hospital in Jaipur on Sunday night, killing eight patients, including three women. The blaze started around 11:20 p.m. in a storeroom on the Neuro‑ICU floor where paper, ICU machines and blood‑sampler tubes were kept. Hospital officials say a short‑circuit likely sparked the fire.

When the alarm rang, the fire brigade rushed into a smoke‑filled ward that was impossible to enter from the inside. The team had to jack the window frame from the other side and spray water over the spreading flames. The fight lasted more than an hour, after which patients were moved – together with their beds – to a street outside the building. Family members claim that warning signs of smoke were ignored, with one resident saying he saw smoke billowing 20 minutes before the fire—and staff didn’t respond.

Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma called the incident “tragic.” He arrived at the hospital at 2:30 a.m., met doctors and officials, and ordered immediate relief for those affected. The CM has set up a six‑member committee to investigate how the fire started and why staff failed to respond. The panel will be led by Iqbal Khan, Commissioner of the Medical Department, and includes senior officials from hospital administration, engineering, the police and fire services.

The state government promises full support to the families and vows to improve safety standards in medical facilities. Opposition leader Tika Ram Jully said the deaths were “extremely sad and heartbreaking” and called for urgent reforms. The investigation is now underway as Jaipur’s emergency services keep a close watch on the situation.
