West Bengal’s North zone is still reeling from a week of heavy rains and deadly landslides, with at least 23 people dead so far. The crisis has sparked sharp criticism from the opposition.
BJP’s IT cell chief and West Bengal observer, Amit Malviya, blasted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday. In a scathing social‑media post, Malviya accused the CM of showing no concern for the victims, pointing to her presence at a Durga Puja carnival in Kolkata that night.
The video that went viral showed Banerjee dancing with popular Bengali film stars as the lights shone over a packed Masjid‑Level Durga Puja event. Malviya’s reply highlighted the contrast: “When 28 (official count) people died and thousands were hit by death and destruction from the Dooars to Darjeeling, Mamata Banerjee was dancing in Kolkata,” he wrote.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local district officials in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri say the current death toll is 23, but they warn it could rise as rescue teams continue to work.
Malviya also mentioned last month’s tragedy in Kolkata, when 12 residents were electrocuted in rain‑filled pockets during Durga Puja. He noted that Banerjee pressed on with the inauguration of pandals, seemingly unbothered by the loss of life. “For Mamata Banerjee, death and destruction mean nothing,” he added, echoing the Bengali proverb, Karo poush mash, karo sarbanash – while some celebrate, others mourn.
The incident has drawn widespread attention as West Bengal continues to grapple with flooding, landslides, and the urgent need for relief operations.
The situation remains fluid, and officials urge caution as weather forecasts predict more rain in the coming days.
