The 2025 Lanka Premier League (LPL) is set to light up Sri Lanka from December 1 to 23, offering 24 days of fast‑paced T20 cricket. With 24 matches—20 league games and 4 knockout contests—the season will be the longest yet in the league’s history.
For the first time, Indian cricketers will take the field. Their names will drop soon, thrilling fans across the subcontinent and adding a new layer of excitement to this familiar format.
All five franchises will play each other twice in the league phase, meaning 20 league games overall. After the round‑robin, the top four teams move on to the playoffs. The top two teams clash in Qualifier 1, and the winner goes straight to the final. Teams ranked third and fourth battle it out in the Eliminator; the winner of that match faces the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2, which determines the second finalist.
The league will be hosted at Sri Lanka’s three premier venues: the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo, the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, and the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla. Samantha Dodanwela, the tournament director, says the timing is perfect for players to gain top‑level match practice just before the global cricket calendar peaks. “Over the years, the LPL has been a launchpad for fresh talent, and this year we expect new names to rise to international prominence,” she notes.
With its mix of international stars and local talent, the LPL 2025 promises to build excitement among fans just months before the World Cup. The tournament is poised to showcase a new generation of players ready to make a splash on the world stage.
