UN calls for humanitarian assistance for earthquake-impacted people in Afghanistan’s Kunar

In Kabul today the United Nations urged the world to act quickly to help thousands of families who lost homes after a powerful earthquake struck Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province. The UN humanitarian coordinator, Indrika Ratwatte, said the winter season is fast approaching and that people still lack safe shelter and clean drinking water.

More than 6,000 homes in Kunar were destroyed, leaving many residents homeless and exposed to harsh winter weather. The UN estimate that nearly 500,000 people across Afghanistan’s eastern provinces are now in need of food, shelter, medical care and psychological support. Humanitarian groups warn that the cold, coupled with limited access to aid, could worsen the crisis in mountain areas where displaced families live in makeshift tents.

Ratwatte called on international donors and aid organisations to step up funding and supplies. “Without immediate help, thousands of vulnerable people could face life‑threatening conditions in the coming months,” she said.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that heavy rainfall and flash floods have already impacted 721 families in Afghanistan’s Kabul, Laghman and Kapisa provinces. The floods washed away more than 1,000 acres of farmland, destroyed homes, damaged roads, and killed 3,000 chickens at a local poultry farm.

The Afghanistan Meteorological Department warns that 17 provinces face the risk of heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and new flooding in the next few days. The combined threats of earthquake damage and sudden flooding underscore the urgent need for coordinated humanitarian assistance in the region.
