Dhaka – Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), A M M Nasir Uddin, said on Monday that no other option exists but to hold the upcoming national election in February 2026 in a fair, credible and transparent way. He told a gathering of senior journalists that the outcome could shape the country’s future.

During the talk, Nasir Uddin stressed that a smooth, free and participatory vote is vital not only for the Election Commission but for the nation as a whole. “This election will define Bangladesh’s path forward, so we must make it a good one,” he said. “The people have no other choice. A fair election is essential for our future.”

He called on the media to support the commission’s efforts by raising public awareness about the electoral process. “Journalists must encourage voters to turn out and help build trust in the Election Commission before the parliamentary polls in February next year,” Nasir Uddin added.

Last month, the CEC highlighted the tough work environment the Commission faces. At the Election Officers’ Conference‑2025 in Dhaka, he admitted that “working in Bangladesh is very difficult, and many of us find it hard to get tasks done.” Yet he assured officials that “no illegal or partisan instructions will ever be given.” The EC will stick strictly to the rules and laws, he said.

Bangladesh is currently in a period of political uncertainty ahead of the general election. Parties that once aided interim Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus in ousting the Awami League, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, are now at odds over reform proposals. The Commission’s focus remains on ensuring a clean, fair election that can restore confidence in the country’s democratic process.
