In Doha, Qatar, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is on a high‑profile visit to boost India‑Qatar trade and investment. He co‑chairs the India‑Qatar Joint Commission on Economic and Commercial Cooperation alongside Qatar’s Commerce Minister Sheikh Faisal bin Thani.

The day opened with a floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi’s statue at the Indian Embassy. Goyal also planted a sapling under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, signalling India’s commitment to sustainability.

During the ministerial meeting, the two leaders reviewed the current trade relationship, which is about $14 billion, and tackled existing trade barriers. They discussed new opportunities in finance, agriculture, healthcare, and many other sectors. Both sides pushed for a comprehensive economic partnership and highlighted the long‑term LNG deal that Qatar will supply India with 7.5 million tonnes per year starting 2028.

Goyal urged Indian and Qatari companies to explore greater business ties, especially in electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, processed foods, textiles, gems and jewellery, IT, high‑tech industries, and solar energy. Both sides agreed that trade could double by 2030 if new avenues are pursued.

The joint commission also tackled non‑tariff challenges and how to make bilateral investment flows smoother. Goyal stressed India’s strong macro‑economic stability and thriving startup ecosystem, which create a welcoming environment for global businesses.

After the commission, the minister held several business meetings with senior Qatari officials and corporate leaders. They explored investment opportunities, technology partnerships, and joint ventures.

At Lulu Mall on The Pearl Island, Goyal launched India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a landmark digital payment platform. The move will simplify payments for the Indian diaspora and local consumers in Qatar.

Later, Goyal spoke to the vibrant Indian community in Qatar, praising their role in strengthening ties between the two countries. He highlighted the strategic partnership elevation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Qatar’s Amir, and the shared goal of doubling trade by 2030.

Goyal reminded the diaspora that India’s growing economy is on track to become the world’s fastest‑growing major economy. He encouraged Indians abroad to keep bridging India and Qatar, helping both nations achieve shared growth.
