Taipei—The Republic of China’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) said that early this morning, Chinese military aircraft and ships were active around Taiwan’s territorial waters. By 6 a.m. local time, the MND saw three sorties of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft and seven ships from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).
According to the MND’s statement on X, authorities had monitored the activity and responded “accordingly.” The post also noted that the flights and vessels were detected in the area surrounding Taiwan’s exclusive economic zone.
A day earlier, the MND reported a larger wave of activity. It counted ten Chinese aircraft sorties and six PLAN ships up to 6 a.m. Monday. Seven of those ten sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s northern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). Again, the report said the ROC Armed Forces were watching the situation closely.
The increased presence has drawn attention to China’s use of “cognitive warfare.” The Taipei Times, citing a new Institute for the Study of War report, says Chinese vessels are broadcasting false signals in Taiwanese waters to gauge how Taiwan’s forces react. The report highlighted incidents in which Chinese fishing boats transmitted counterfeit Automatic Identification System (AIS) data.
For instance, a fishing vessel named Min Shi Yu 06718 sent its own AIS signal along with one from Hai Xun 15012—a name usually used for Chinese Coast Guard vessels. The references came from Starboard Maritime Intelligence. The report explains that the Hai Xun designation is normally tied to the China Maritime Safety Administration, a civilian agency that rarely acts in a coercive way against Taiwan. This suggests that a fishing boat may be impersonating a law‑enforcement vessel.
These actions come amid an ongoing build‑up of tensions between Taiwan and China. Chinese military aircraft and naval ships frequently patrol the Taiwan Strait, often crossing the median line or entering Taiwan’s ADIZ. Taiwan’s defense forces monitor, record, and respond to such incursions to protect its sovereignty.
The MND’s frequent posts on social media aim to keep the public informed and to demonstrate Taiwan’s readiness to respond to any challenge in its waters. The Republic of China remains alert as it seeks to safeguard its territorial integrity against Chinese military and informational maneuvers.
