India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has finally landed in Qatar, thanks to a live rollout at Lulu Hypermarket in Doha. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal announced the launch on X, calling it a “game‑changer” for digital connectivity and easier payments between the two nations.

The new UPI service is already working at Qatar National Bank (QNB) point‑of‑sale terminals, covering large parts of the Qatari market. This means Indian travelers can pay for groceries, taxis, and restaurant meals in Qatar with the same app and instant money transfer that’s common back home.

“At Lulu Mall, I told attendees that UPI is more than just tech – it can transform trade between Qatar and India,” Goyal said. “When our payment systems integrate, we trade smarter and cheaper, building deeper trust.”

The launch is part of India’s push to spread its digital payment ecosystem worldwide. NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) teamed up with QNB and Japanese gateway NETSTARS to make the service possible. The collaboration ensures almost real‑time money movement at very low cost, a hallmark of UPI’s global reputation.

UPI has been a success story in India for nine years, handling about 640 billion transactions daily. Today, Qatar becomes the eighth country to host UPI, further expanding India’s international financial footprint and helping boost trade and tourism with its Gulf neighbors.

India’s digital payment journey continues to gain momentum, and this new launch in Qatar shows how the country’s “Digital India” initiatives are reaching far beyond its borders.
