In Tumakuru district of Karnataka, a tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday evening when seven family members were swept off by the strong currents in the backwaters of the Markonahalli reservoir.

Police recovered the bodies of two victims and rescued one person who is now receiving treatment in a hospital. The search continues for the remaining four missing people – a 45‑year‑old woman, a 44‑year‑old woman, a four‑year‑old girl, and a one‑year‑old boy.

The family lived in the B.G. Palya neighbourhood of Tumakuru city. After a lunch visit to a relative’s house in Magadipalya, they headed to the dam to play in the water. Their excitement turned into panic as the currents pulled them away.

Firefighters, police, and emergency crews sprang into action on the spot. Officers from the Huliyurdurga and Amruturu police stations are still hunting for the missing members, but the search has yet to yield new leads.

This incident comes amid a series of recent drownings in Karnataka waters. Earlier in September, a 22‑year‑old man died while fording the Malaprabha River. In July, a self‑ie selfie taken in the Cauvery River near Mandya district claimed a 36‑year‑old autorickshaw driver, and three teenagers vanished in the Tungabhadra River near Mantralayam.

Authorities urge anyone visiting rivers or reservoirs to stay vigilant, avoid swimming in the backwaters, and skip selfies near fast‑moving water. The Karnataka Police will keep the public updated as the investigation continues.
