On Tuesday night, police entered the basement of a house in Sector 11, Chandigarh, where they found the body of Y. Puran Kumar, the Inspector General of Police (IG) in Haryana. The 49‑year‑old IPS officer, who came from the 2001 batch, was reported to have shot himself with his service revolver.
Police said they discovered a will and a final note in the house, though no suicide note was found at the scene. The corpse was located by Kumar’s daughter, and critical evidence—his mobile phones and documents—has been seized for the investigation.
Chandigarh police, led by SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, confirmed the incident around 1:30 p.m. after receiving a report from the residence at House No. 116, Sector 11. “The CID team is on site and the investigation is underway,” Kaur told reporters. The body has been sent for a post‑mortem examination.
Kumar’s wife, Amneet, who serves as commissioner and secretary in the foreign cooperation department, is on an official visit to Japan with a delegation headed by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. She is expected to return to India on Wednesday.
Sources say Kumar had taken the gun Monday, and the investigation will look into whether recent career moves or personal matters may have led to his tragic decision. Last month, he was posted to Sunaria Jail in Rohtak, the same jail where Dera Sacha Sauda chief Ram Rahim is serving a sentence for sexual exploitation of sadhvis.
Earlier this year, Kumar wrote a letter to Chief Minister Saini questioning the promotion of certain IPS officers. He argued that promotions had been granted illegally, bypassing Union Home Ministry guidelines and favoring only those with approval from the Finance Department. This controversy culminated in some officers receiving promotions retroactively, while others—like Kumar—were promoted with immediate effect, causing financial loss and a sense of unfairness.
Kumar, an engineering graduate, was born on 19 May 1973 and was due to retire on 31 May 2033. The police are now probing both professional and personal factors that might have influenced his actions.
