On Tuesday, a West Bengal hospital became the center of a political spat. BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh publicly denied giving permission for the chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, to visit him while he was receiving treatment in Siliguri.
On X, the MP wrote, “I just learned from media that CM Banerjee was to visit the hospital.” He added that hospital staff had asked for his consent at the last minute, which he refused. “The BJP MP in ICU cannot speak, so there’s no need for his approval,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee arrived at the same private hospital to meet injured BJP MP Khagen Murmu, who has been hospitalized since he was attacked in a landslide rescue attempt. The chief minister spoke briefly with Murmu, checked on his condition, and promised the family further help while urging him to follow doctors’ instructions.
Ghosh called the CM’s visit “a stunt.” He said the meeting lasted less than a minute and the only footage taken was for photo‑ops. “There was no meaningful conversation because he’s unable to speak,” he warned.
The attack on MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh happened in Nagrakata, Jalpaiguri district, as they moved through landslide‑hit North Bengal to distribute relief supplies. Both leaders were rushed to Siliguri for treatment.
Ghosh slammed the TMC‑run administration for “cynical and disgusting politics” and vowed that the BJP would stay firmly behind West Bengal’s people, despite what he called TMC’s “goading.”
