Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh – In the wake of the brutal killing of 38‑year‑old Dalit man Hariom Valmiki, the Uttar Pradesh police have taken swift action. The local inspector, Sanjay Kumar, who ran the Unchahar police station, was removed from duty and replaced by Ajay Rai. Five police officers have been suspended while four suspects were arrested.
The police say they will investigate the case under the National Security Act and the Gangsters Act. The named accused are Vijay Singh, Vaibhav Singh, Vipin Maurya, Sahedev Pasi and Suresh Kumar Maurya. Twenty more people who were at the scene and did not prevent the violence or call for help are also to be taken into custody.
Valmiki’s death happened on October 2 in Jamunapur village, just outside the Unchahar police station. Villagers mistook him for a thief and beat him to death. His wife, Pinky, has publicly asked the government for help, saying “My husband was beaten to death. Whatever happened to my husband, the same should happen to those who beat him to death.” She also added that she needs support for her daughter.
Opposition MP Rahul Gandhi, a senior Congress leader, condemned the murder and slammed the ruling BJP. In a post on X, he called the incident “a murder of humanity, the Constitution, and justice.” He added, “The brutal murder of Dalit youth Hariom Valmiki in Raebareli is not just the murder of one person – it is an attack on rights, on the rule of law, and on society at large.”
The government has promised to file a charge sheet after the arrest of all involved parties. The Uttar Pradesh police have warned that any person who fails to stop future mob violence will be held accountable.
