A BJP member was badly hurt in a violent attack in Nagrakata, West Bengal, and police have yet to make any arrests.

The incident happened on Monday when MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh were on their way to meet people affected by recent landslides and distribute relief supplies. They were assaulted by a group of eight strangers, and the MP was rushed to a primary health centre before being transferred to a hospital in Siliguri.

Murmu suffered a fractured cheekbone, a broken nose and a severe injury from below his eye, requiring seven stitches and possibly a metal plate. Doctors plan to operate on his left face and may relocate him to AIIMS Delhi for further treatment. Because of the injuries, he will need at least 15 days of speech‑free recovery.

Jalpaiguri district police say the case is still under investigation. “We are probing the complaint,” a senior officer told reporters Wednesday. “No arrests have been made as of now.” The BJP has filed a formal complaint against the eight accused and is demanding their immediate arrest.

The attack has drawn political attention. West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose visited the MP on Tuesday, as did Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari and several cabinet ministers. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised the state government over the incident, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla urged the Bengal administration to produce a swift report on the matter.

The security situation in Jalpaiguri remains tense, and the police are working to identify and apprehend the attackers. Followers and residents of West Bengal are watching closely as the investigation unfolds.
