Mumbai – Producer Sandeep Singh’s Legend Studios has issued a public statement after film director Madhur Bhandarkar raised a legal complaint. Bhandarkar claimed that Legend Studios was using the title “Chandni Bar” without permission for a new sequel.

Legend Studios says it has fully secured the rights. The company presented the official Government of India trademark certificate, proving that the title belongs to the original makers, R. Mohan and the late Lata Mohan Iyer. The certificate shows the trademark is registered under that name and that Legend Studios holds the option rights.

No other banner can legally use the title,” co‑producer Vishal Gurnani stated. “We’ve obtained the option from the original producers who own the registered trademark and intellectual property.” He added that the studio’s legal team is already handling responses to trade associations to protect its rights.

Bhandarkar filed a complaint with the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA). IMPPA instructed Legend Studios and director Ajay Bahl to stop using the title until the matter is resolved. The original Chandni Bar hit theatres in 2001 and was a blockbuster for Bhandarkar, launching his career. It starred Tabu in the lead role.

The new film, titled “Chandni Bar Returns,” is scheduled for a worldwide release on 3 December 2026.

By addressing the issue head‑on and releasing the trademark documentation, Legend Studios aims to keep the sequel on track while clearing any legal doubts.
