Mumbai, Oct 8 – Shiv Sena blasted a shoe‑throwing attempt aimed at Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, calling the act a direct attack on the Indian Constitution and on democracy itself. The party’s mouthpiece, Sa amana, urged the public to reject such violence and condemned the incident as “shameless”.

Why the party reacted so strongly

In its editorial, the Thackeray camp said the shoe‑throwing shows a growing loss of faith in the judiciary. “The Supreme Court is still the only hope for India,” the paper wrote, “and what happened to Chief Justice B.R. Gavai is a disgrace that must be denounced by everyone.” The editorial linked the act to the BJP and Sangh ideology, saying the attacker was “an adherent of Sanatan Dharma” who has traditionally stood against the Supreme Court.

A call for a respectful Hindu nation

Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena said a Hindu state should not be barbaric or fanatical. “Being Hindu does not mean being a fanatic,” the article added. Critics who claim to act in the name of Sanatan Dharma, but resort to violence, “betray the faith they profess,” the editor said, citing an example of a “divine vision” that led to retaliation. The piece praised Chief Justice Gavai for his restraint, noting he did not fall into the trap of the Sangh Parivar.

Critique of India’s judiciary

The editorial also launched a broader critique of the judicial system. It claimed that corruption and nepotism have seeped into the courts, and that government pressure turns judges into political tools. “It is understandable for a patriot to protest injustice,” the paper said, but adding that “shouting in the name of Sanatan Dharma while attacking a sitting Chief Justice is unacceptable.”

Historical context and reminders

The Sa amana piece recalled past Chief Justices, including Dhananjay Chandrachud, and warned that former judges sometimes take government posts after retirement. It reminded readers that the judiciary must remain independent and immune to communal or political agendas.

Key takeaways

  • Shiv Sena condemned the shoe‑throwing at Justice Gavai as an attack on the Constitution and democracy.
  • The party linked the act to BJP‑Sangh ideology and criticized the attacker as an extremist rooted in Sanatan Dharma.
  • Sa amana called for a respectful Hindu state and reinforced the need for an independent judiciary free from corruption and political pressure.
  • The editorial praised Justice Gavai’s restraint and warned against political or communal interference with judges.

By highlighting these points, Shiv Sena seeks to protect the integrity of India’s courts and uphold democratic values.
