Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand will travel to India next week for her first official visit since taking office in early 2024. The trip comes as India and Canada gear up to refresh their relationship after a period of strain.
The two leaders met in New York on September 29, while the United Nations General Assembly was in session. India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr Jaishankar, called the meeting “good” and welcomed the return of high commissioners as a positive sign. On X, he added he looks forward to welcoming Anand in India.
The visit follows a similar thaw in June. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 summit, signaling a break after more than two years of tension. The break began in 2023 when former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blamed India for the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India rejected the claim and accused Ottawa of giving terrorists a safe haven.
In August both countries reinstated their high commissioners. India’s Dinesh Patnaik took up the post in Ottawa, while Canada named Christopher Cooter as its new High Commissioner in Delhi. Last month, Canada’s Deputy Foreign Minister David Morrison and National Security Advisor Nathalie G. Drouin visited New Delhi. They agreed to restart paused dialogues and to bring diplomatic staff back.
India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval also held talks with Canadian counterpart Nathalie Drouin. The discussions focused on restoring stability and building trust after months of diplomatic friction. The appointment of Christopher Cooter and the resumption of top‑level talks gave new momentum to the bilateral reset.
While traveling, Anand will meet Indian officials, discuss trade and security issues, and work to smooth over past disagreements. The visit underscores both sides’ desire to rebuild ties and to cut the next chapter of cooperation in a cooler, more constructive tone.
