Washington, DC – U.S. lawmakers sent a letter to former President Donald Trump on Wednesday urging him to reverse recent tariff hikes that have hurt U.S.–India trade and threaten the partnership between the world’s two largest democracies.
The letter, signed by a group of Representatives from districts with large Indian‑American populations, says the Trump administration’s new duties on Indian goods strain relations with India and create negative fallout for both sides. Congress says the tariffs—once set at 25 % and then raised to 50 % in late August 2025—were imposed in response to India’s energy purchases from Russia. The higher rates have hurt Indian manufacturers, raised prices for U.S. consumers, and disrupted supply chains that American companies rely on.
Lawmakers emphasized that the U.S.–India trade relationship is a major source of jobs for both nations. They note that American factories use key inputs from India in areas from semiconductors and healthcare to energy, while Indian investment in the U.S. creates new jobs in local communities.
The letter warns that a prolonged tariff battle could push India toward countries that are hostile to the United States, such as China and Russia, undermining strategic interests in the Indo‑Pacific. It calls India “a stabilizing force” in the region and highlights its role in the Quad alliance with Australia, Japan and the U.S.
“Our two nations share democratic values that set us apart from authoritarian competitors,” the lawmakers write. “Cooperation shows how free and open societies can thrive together.”
They urge President Trump to reset the relationship—not to confront India. The letter proposes a review of current tariff policy and continued dialogue with Indian leadership to keep the U.S.‑India economic partnership strong.
The letter was signed by Representatives Deborah K. Ross, Ro Khanna, Brad Sherman, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Pramila Jayapal, Frank Pallone Jr., and others. ()
